Please note that the minutes of the meeting will not be formally passed until the next meeting - what follows is a summary of discussion at the Parents Association Meeting September 2013

A very warm welcome back to all the children and parents - we hope you had a great summer and are all ready for the new school year.  A very special welcome to the new Junior Infants and children in other classes attending the school for the first time this year and their parents.

See below for a short summary from the Parents' Association meeting held on Monday 9th September.

Family Fun Day, AGM, IBM, Uniforms, New staff, Parenting Course, GAA, Basketball

This is the last email from our current Parents Committee - we will be actively looking for new members to the committee for this school year so I hope we can depend on some of you out there to put yourself forward. It's great to get involved and try to make a difference along with the principal and staff and the Board of Management to help improve many aspects of your daughter school life (it's not just fund raising and coffee mornings!)

Parental Involvement programme is again high on our priority list this year. We have asked if possible that as part of this initiative that each class teacher would inform parents (possibly by a note at the start of each term) of what they expect to cover that term. This might also include some tips and tricks for parents on how to assist and support their children (as we know there have been changes to how they do certain things like subtraction and multiplication!!)

We hope to continue to progress this initiative with the support of Mrs Fahy and her wonderful staff.

Please do consider putting yourself forward as your class representative as it is the only way to ensure that your voice and those of your child's class are heard. It's just one meeting per month and we break the committee into sub-committees who work together according to their agreed goals for the year.

Our AGM is scheduled for Monday 7th October at 8pm in the school hall - a note will issue this week and it includes a nomination form for the committee.

IBM has donated a fabulous Young Explorer™ to the School. This is a computer housed in brightly-coloured, child friendly Little Tikes™. The unit will be placed in Senior Infants class as it is aimed at children up to 7 years. It will be very exciting for the children and it's great to see more technology being introduced at this age. See for more information.

The school also applied and received a donation from Microsoft of a full reading program with headsets. In this tech savvy age it's so important that the children are educated in the use of this new equipment. Good luck to the teachers and girls with these fabulous new tools. We'll update you on progress during the year.

Family Fun day was scheduled to take place this Sunday 15th but we have had to postpone as there are a number of clashing events (World Parks Day, Flightfest) and also we are short on volunteer parents to help out.

We are proposing to re-schedule to September 29th. Can you please email us here if:

1.    You are available and would like to attend with your family on September 29th 2-6pm in the school grounds; and

2.  You can spare 1 hour to help us out at the event.

We need a minimum of 10 guaranteed volunteers to help setup and to keep an eye at the bouncy castle stations. Please email us if you can help the committee out on the 29th.

It's a great day out and fabulous fun for all the family (weather permitting) with bouncy castles, human foosball, sumo wrestling suits, bouncy castle assault course.

Unfortunately if we don't get an adequate response we will have to postpone again - so Please - 1 hour is all we need from you!!

Speech & Drama: There will be no speech and drama provided this year. Liz Brennan has retired from class teaching.

Uniforms: Mrs Fahy acknowledged at our meeting that there were some teething problems with the new school uniform supplier Strike Performance. She hopes to address this next year by arranging a day in the school where parents can bring their daughter into the school on a specified day in the last term in order to be measured.

The school crest is available from Strike and can be added to existing blue jumpers (no need to purchase a brand new jumper with the crest).

Mrs. Fahy advised that although the cardigan was available from Strike Performance that, in fact, it should have only been a jumper that was sold to parents. She will talk to the supplier to make sure there is no future confusion.

There will be no change to the school tracksuit this year but a new tracksuit (red top and navy sweat bottoms that can be purchased separately) has been proposed and will be decided on for start of next school year (2014).

Teaching Staff: There have been some changes in personnel in the school over the summer. Maura Gaffney retired at the end of the last school year and a permanent position has now been advertised. Interviews are to take place this week and a decision will be announced once this process completes.

A new resource teacher (Cindy Callaghan) is also in place to replace Eleanor Fallon who retired at the end of last year.

Mrs. Fahy advised that the sponsored walk raised €2500.

Parenting Course: In conjunction with the NPC, the PA organized a parenting course before the summer break. This which was very well received by the parents who participated.  It is proposed to hold both a further course(s) this term. The course comprises of three 2 ½ hour sessions held over consecutive weeks.  Can you please advise your class representative or respond to this email by Monday next, 16 September if you wish to attend the Parenting Course, and state your preference for timing, i.e.,:

·        In the morning, when the children have been dropped to school (9:45am to 12:15pm)

·        In the evening, (7:30pm to 10pm)

GAA and Basketball: 5th and 6th class are taking part in trials this week and the team will be taking part in the Cumann Na mBunscoil league. Fingers crossed we could end up in Croke Park supporting the girls. Good luck to Paul O'Brien and Ms. Chapman who will be mentoring the girls. The Parents Association have also sponsored new kit (and also new basket ball kit) for the team.

If you have received this email in error or you no longer wish to receive this email - please reply by return and we will update our contact list.

As always if you have any queries on the above do not hesitate to contact us here.
